New Road+ Frames Available – Soon

Seventy-six Road+ frames delivered.

After about 6 months of waiting, the new Road+ frames arrived on a nice warm day in Pt. Reyes Station.  Seventy-six frames painted in either Ultra Violet or Golden Lime.  And, in person, the colors do not disappoint.  There’s no change to the first run of Road+ frames, save for the addition of the triple “anything” cage braze-ons on the fork.  I had completely forgotten I added the braze-ons to the fork, so it was a happy surprise to see that.  Other than that feature, there’s no change to the original Road+ frameset.

The photos of the frames in the shop don’t do justice to how great they look.  Under the shop’s skylight, the colors are slightly washed out, but pretty close to what they look like in person.

I’ve got a bunch of frames that were pre-sold that are being prepped and shipped.  Those should all be shipped by today.  Then it’s on to several complete builds.  I’ll update the webstore with the new frames in a day or two when I can get caught up a bit.  The Ultra Violet was super popular and is already sold out in the 50cm size.  53cm too – as of today, there’s only one available.

Alright time to get to more frame prep and bike building.

It’s funny that I have essentially arrived at the same concept as you as regards what a good bike is.

I used to ride road as a young man but quit racing in college ( engineering ) because I didn’t have the time. After college I commuted short distances to work for more than a decade and cycled casually on a road tourer, 531 ST tubing with cantilevers and comfort geometry.

I bought a mountain bike in 96 and still ride it but it now has a hub dynamo, close ration bloc and road tires ( I think they are 1.5″ and I wish they were 1.75″. It’s a Specialized Rockhopper hard tail, bladed fork. The only thing wrong with it is that it’s aluminum. The family has been pestering me for bikes and wanting to buy “shirt” at Walmart. I have been scouring Offer Up and Craigslist for older steel mountain bikes with butted chromoly frames and just giving them a thorough service, change of tires and when I can, a tighter set of rear cogs. I am looking at trying out some 650B wheels if I can find them with rim brake rims and a set of linear pull or cantis that will work on these MTB frames. I just sent the wife out on the Gary Fisher and she intuitively understands the feel of a steel frame and why it’s better. I wrecked her steel Hard Rock a few years back and she has moaned about how she loved that bike ever since.

My nephew is also realizing how good the steel Specialized I set up for him is in terms of just eating up the road. I have had to instill him the fact that while the bike may not look like a good bike, it would cost an awful lot of money to get something equivalent from a store.

I do have to say that as an old school bike guy I find the fork crown on the Road+ very hard to like. I love Italian lug work and sloping fork crowns and while I am sure that structurally the fork is a great design it is no beauty. The functional modern rear end I can adjust to but “man dat is one huggaly fark” as they would say in Jamaica. The frames are very reasonably priced of course and the aesthetics of a beautiful fork would cost money. I find this the one thing that keeps me away from modern bikes although I see that you have a much more traditional fork on the Road model. Looks very like the fork on Mercian frames I had in the past that were built in the late 1970s ( Mercian is from Derby as I recall ).

Clearly I have too much time on my hands here but I do love your concept and agree with it hands down. Very jealous of where you guys are. I live in South Florida. Awful cycling here. I spent some time in the Bay Area about 5 years back driving my elderly aunt around the countryside and turning green with envy at the many bikers I saw in such beautiful settings.
