File this under “whoa!” If it was a surprise to me when a Kenda Karma 1.9 fit in the stays and fork of the Black Mountain Cycles cross frame, it was a shock when Nick shoehorned WTB Nanoraptor 2.1 tires in to his frame and fork. I wouldn’t go so far as saying this is now a 29″er, but… I would still prefer to run mine with moderate size tires and with more clearance. But, Nick’s rockin’ some fat tires in his. Here’s a picture of his bike, a like to his flickr page with more photos, and some words Nick had to say about his new bike.
“We usually ride these trails on rigid ss 29ers but lately I have been having fun with the challenge of riding off road fix. Tonight was no exception. The bike performed flawlessly! The icing on the cake is the fit! The longer headtube is exactly what I needed that the xcheck did not have. I am so happy with this thing! I am also glad I got the brown. It is understated and classy and just looks like it belongs in the woods!”
Thanks, Nick!

Mike,
Nick's build leaves me with a question. I see riders who shoe-horn the fattest rubber they can fit in their frame and call it monstercross, but can they remove their wheels without deflating their tires? What's the biggest tire you can fit in your frames and still get it past the cantis without deflating?
Good question and one I can't answer at the moment. However, it's not one that actually is of great concern to me since I've got mountain bikes that require tires to be deflated for removal or installation. It's not necessarily a factor of tire size, but of brake pad length and whether it opens fully past the stay or fork leg.
Maybe Nick can let us know. I'm not sure when I'll get time to check this. I do know that a FireCross 45 can be removed and installed without deflatitng with the brakes I'm running which are Tektro CR-720 with a short cross pad (road length) in front and a longer v-brake length rear pad.
If 45s fit that's good enough for me. I don't race and I don't necessarily care about fast wheel changes, but I take off my wheels for other reasons besides fixing flats (I run tubeless and never get flats anyway). I use the Park stand where you have to remove the front wheel (PRS-20?) for example. To me if you have to deflate to remove it's not meant to be..
