As long as I can remember, I always wanted to be able to fit a bigger tire in my cross bike. When I built my one and only frame, a lugged cross bike, in 1990, the biggest tire that it could fit in back was a 28. Back then there really weren’t much bigger cross tires anyway. I didn’t build it to race cross. I built it to ride trails and dirt roads. It was a fun riding bike, but I always thought it would be over-the-top-fun if it had fatter tires. Much fatter tires.
Fast forward to 2007 and I had the opportunity to design a cross frame, some call it a monster cross, that is a reflection of what I want in a drop bar bike that is equally at home on the road or on the trail. This is what I’ve wanted since 1990.
The steel used in the cross frame is a heat-treated, double butted, 4130 chrome-moly tubing that comes from the leading steel tubing supplier in Taiwan. It’s tubing I specified for the ride quality I want. Other features include Kirk Pacenti’s elegant Paris-Brest-Paris fork crown, clearance for up to 50 millimeters of rubber, and horizontal dropouts to fine-tune chainstay length or run it as a single-speed. No bike can truly “do it all,” but these come darn close.
