As of today, Marin county, and the other 6 counties comprising the Bay Area, are mandating all residents shelter in place to slow the transmission of COVID-19, unless you are involved in essential business. A bike shop is not essential. Because of that, Black Mountain Cycles will be closed for the foreseeable future as long as required. It’s inconvenient. I’m a long-range type so a few weeks and as many as a couple of months, if necessary, is ok with me to protect the greater population.
Even though, the shop will be closed, there are exceptions. And I’m reading this info that’s published on the Marin Health and Human Services website as a means to continue basic operations at the shop. “Employees of non-essential businesses may report to work to maintain what the Order defines as “minimum basic operations,” which are the operations necessary to maintain the value of the business’s inventory and to provide for the business’s security.” So, I will keep the webstore open and will fill orders as they come in since both USPS and UPS will be operating during this time.
It’s helpful that I am a solo-run business and I can maintain safe distances and can, for the most part, comply the the mandate to shelter in place. If I have orders to fill, I will be in the shop with the door locked. Once an order is ready to ship and does ship, I’ll vacate the shop and will be self-isolating in my home. Thankfully, it’s encouraged for people to get exercise and going for walks or bike rides are ok, as long as it’s done solo or with someone you are sheltering in place with.
I’m hopeful that the current situation doesn’t affect the new MCD frames that are en-route. Hopeful, but I have a feeling there may be a delay once the frames hit US soil. I won’t know anything about that until the frames actually arrive at the port of Oakland in a few weeks. In the mean time, stay safe and be smart.
